If you are considering purchase or sale of a Domain name or an operating web site, we recommend that you get a Domain name appraisal. A Domain name appraisal will quantify the relative fair market value of your virtual property. Without that, you may be losing or wasting, thousands or tens of thousands of dollars as you buy and sell!

What makes a Domain name valuable? Over 110 million valid Domain names are registered to date. Of those, 81 million are .coms! There are over 120,000 Domain names reserved and registered each day. It is impossible to find simple internet addresses that identify any given foreseeable image or service. Studies show that every word in the dictionary has been registered! Ownership of a desirable simple generic term or phrase, in Domain name format, could well represent a valuable and growing investment, both now and in the future, as politics and feelings change. A quality appraisal will establish a benchmark. Therefore, clearly, rarity is a prime factor in the value of a Domain name. Another is demand. If you have a Domain name, and I want that name, the laws of supply and demand certainly apply.

To estimate the value of a Domain name, consider the value of one single customer. Estimating the productive life of a relationship with a happy customer and all of the referrals that the customer may provide, the cost of a high quality Domain name may be comparatively small. This is especially true when you consider that your competition may well reserve the optimum Domain names, or "suite" of names, before you!

For example, if one customer is worth $ 1,000.00 to your enterprise over the lifetime of the business relationship, and your new web site attracts just 100 new customers over the life of your company, then the Domain could be valued at $ 100,000.00 to your business. If your premium URL attracted 10,000 new customers and they were each valued at only ten dollars in revenue over their lifetime, then you would come up with the same $100,000.00 valuation. Regardless of how many new customers that a Domain name may attract to your enterprise or company, it should hold its value and, in all likelihood, the Domain name value will increase over time.

Domain names are a commodity, like jewelry and real estate, that require careful and professional valuation. Appraisals offer other benefits to Domain name owners. When the value of a Domain name is estimated by a disinterested third party, the involved parties are more likely to be at ease when a transaction occurs.

Value of .com - it truly is a dot com world; not .net or .org.
Novelty names - there is a cut-both-ways with novelty names.
Numbers - me4u2day.org - must be explained to be used.
Double letter confusion (cubannurse.com; cubaagency.com).
Hyphenated Domain names. (cuban-cigar.com) there are exceptions.
Names that may violate any Trademark of record.
Appraised values of Domain names change over time.

The more that a Domain name must be explained in order to be appropriately used on the internet, understood and remembered, the less it is worth!

There are nine distinct components to Domain name value:

  1. Use Potential in any given field - Does the Domain name have great use potential in any particular field? Is the name well suited to anchor a commercial web site or non-profit organization? Is the Domain name already trademarked? Example: law.com or petroleum.com.
  2. Descriptiveness - Is the Domain name descriptive in a way that adds value to your endeavor? What is its ability to be associated with content. Is the Domain name highly brandable? Example: !Yahoo.com or CubanLottery.com.
  3. Intuitivity - Is the Domain name a "natural?" Is the Domain name easily remembered? That is, when one thinks of the activity or business to utilize the Domain name on the World Wide Web, does one naturally think of your chosen Domain name? Example: CubanLottery.com.
  4. Speak/Spell - What is the likelihood that the Domain name will be spelled correctly after hearing it having been spoken. Example: CubanLottery.com.
  5. Marketplace Presence - How will search engines react to the name and to an attendant group or "cluster suite" of Domain names under common control? Example: CubanLottery.com and Cuban-Lottery.com have an increased value as a pair or part of a "cluster suite." In this example, each of the two Domain names has value and additionally, the control of both of the names in the "cluster suite" also has its own separate and definable value.
  6. Length - How few characters are in the name? Generally, the lower the number of characters in the Domain name, the higher the Domain name value.
  7. Alpha Character Purity - In virtually every case, unless the Domain name is appraised as a part of a "cluster suite," Domain names containing only letters (a, b, c, x, y, z, etc.), are the most desirable. Numerals (1, 2, 3, etc.) and hyphens, unless the Domain name is appraised as a part of a common sense "cluster suite," detract from value. (see Speak/Spell, above)
  8. Dot Value - What extension does the Domain name have? Is it a .com, .net, .org, .edu, .cu, .tv, .info or other extension? Greatest value, by far, is vested in the .com Domain name extension. Consideration must be given and value must be ascribed to the business of the user and use context of the Domain name.
  9. Current Search Engine Popularity (if any) - If your chosen Domain name has an existing, appreciable "search engine awareness" the value will be increased in proportion to its popularity.

In addition to the above, there are often assets attendant to established Domain names such as: an established database; client, contact and vendor goodwill; trained employee base; facilities; operation hardware, prepaid contracts, IP rights; software, distribution channel and e-commerce technology. All of these are potentially very valuable and severable from the Domain name, for sale elsewhere.
